Thank you colleagues for sharing the good stories about Dick who made many positive impacts on us, personally, technically, professionally, and internationally! I would like to add some more. Dick supervised several Chinese students and scholars and made a number of trips to China as Prof. Paul Wayne showed with a couple of photos as examples. Dick, as the chair of the GI international Activities Council, was instrumental in developing and signing the cooperative agreement between the GI and the Chinese Institution of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (CISMGE) in 2009 (see the photo below). In the past few days, this sad news was shared on the Chinese social media and the geotechnical community there mourned this significant loss with many condolences. Dick will be greatly missed by us and many people in the world.
