Lecture Other Geotechnical Geotechnical Frontiers 2025 occurs every six years and is the merging of the Geosynthetics Conference and the annual Geo-Congress replacing both events in 2025. This popular event is where the geotechnical, civil and geo-professional communities unite to share developments in geotechnical engineering and technologies. To prepare for the 2025 conference in Lousiville, we bring you a series of live streams featuring case histories from the Ohio River Valley region!
Our second in the series will be presented Tuesday, October 29, at 2pm ET. John Wolosick of Keller will present on the 2014 National Corvette Museum sinkhole.
In 2014, a deep sinkhole opened up directly under the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green , Kentucky. Eight very valuable Corvettes of various vintages were swallowecropile foundations were chosen as the most effective repair to prevent the structure from totally collapsing.
An extensive cave system was discovered under the building. Caves are common in karst terrain and in this area of Kentucky. The micropiles were attached to the existing shallow foundations and drilled directly through the caves to support the structure.
John Wolosick is a Senior Advisor with Keller. With 45 years in the industry, John is an expert in soil nailing, slope stabilization, and anchored earth retention. Before joining Keller (then Hayward Baker) in 1996, John held various roles in engineering and operations at Law Engineering Testing Company, CGC, and Nicholson Construction. With a passion for the industry and its advancement, John has published over 35 technical papers and has been involved with numerous associations and committees, including DFI, ADSC, and ASCE. In addition to the DSA, he has received several honors for his contributions, including the 2008 ASCE/Geo-Institute Martin S. Kapp Foundation Engineering Award, the 2017 Lizzi Lecture for the International Society of Micropiles, and the 2022 ASCE Geo-Institute “GeoLegend” award. John was also named the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers ‘Engineer of the Year – Industry’ in 2017 and was awarded the George F. Sowers Piedmont Award by the Georgia Geo-Institute in 2019. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s in civil engineering from the University of Illinois and is a registered Professional Engineer in over nine states.
The Geo-Institute is a technical society with about 12,000 geotechnical engineers and geologists as members. Find out more or join at http://www.geoinstitute.org.
