Line 6 (Chengdu Metro) opened

Line 6 is a crosstown northwest-south-west pivotal line. It is the second longest metro line in Chengdu and the longest non-branching line in China at 68.88 km (42.80 mi) (with Chengdu Line 18 being in first place for both). It has more stations than any other metro line in China, with 54 currently plus two more infill stations coming later. It is one of the four lines to have started operation on 18 Dec 2020. Line 6's color is brown.

The Zifeng Tower opened

Zifeng Tower is a 450-meter (1,480 ft) supertall skyscraper in Nanjing, Jiangsu. The 66-story building completed in 2010 comprises retail and office. Floors 49-71 feature a hotel, numerous restaurants, and a public observatory. The building is currently the tallest in Nanjing and Jiangsu province, the eleventh tallest in China and the twentieth tallest in the world. The Tower occupies an area of 18,721 square meters.

Alan Voorhees died

Alan Manners Voorhees was an American transportation engineer and urban planner who designed many large public works in the United States. Voorhees was born in Highland Park, New Jersey. Voorhees designed the street grid for land that was reclaimed in lower Manhattan in New York City, connecting new streets to centuries-old already existing roads and to the Brooklyn Bridge. He was also one of the early designers of the United States' Interstate Highway System and helped determine how the highways would cut through or bypass urban areas. He was also involved in the design of many subway systems including those in São Paulo, Hong Kong, Caracas, and Washington, D.C.

Richard Maury was born

Richard Fontaine Maury was an American railway engineer and naturalized Argentine. He became known for the project of the Argentine "Ramal C-14" of the Ferrocarril General Manuel Belgrano and the touristic Tren a las Nubes. Maury, also, worked on the Transandine Railway from Mendoza to Las Cuevas, Argentina, on the road from Acheral to Tafi del Valle, and the railway line Yacuíba-Santa Cruz-Sucre, in Bolivia.

1867 Keelung earthquake

The 1867 Keelung earthquake occurred off the northern coast of Taiwan on the morning of December 18 with a magnitude of 7.0. It produced strong shaking that seriously damaged the cities of Keelung and Taipei. A tsunami, thought to be the only confirmed destructive of its kind in Taiwan, drowned hundreds and had a run-up exceeding 15 m (49 ft). The total death toll was estimated to be 580 while more than 100 were injured. It was followed by aftershocks that were felt on average ten times a day.

Canvass White died

Canvass White was an American engineer and inventor. He was chief engineer at the Delaware and Raritan Canal and he patented Rosendale cement, which became the dominant cement in the United States until 1900.

Christopher Polhem was born

Christopher Polhammar, better known as Christopher Polhem, which he took after his ennoblement in 1716, was a Swedish scientist, inventor and industrialist. He made significant contributions to the economic and industrial development of Sweden, particularly mining. He was ennobled by King Charles XII of Sweden for his contributions to Swedish technological development.
