Lahore Metro opened

Lahore Metro is an automated rapid transit system in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan and the first driverless metro in Pakistan. Three metro lines have been proposed, of which the Orange Line is operational. It is also Pakistan's first metro line system. The initial plan called for an 82 km (51 mi) rail network with 60 stations to be constructed in four separate phases. The first phase involved the construction of a 27 km (17 mi) rail line between Gajju Matta and Shahdara Bagh, with an 11.6 km (7.2 mi) section underground. The project was shelved in 2008 and the orange line was agreed to continue in May 2014.

Ürümqi Metro opened

The Ürümqi Metro or Ürümqi Subway is a rapid transit system in operation in Ürümqi, capital of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region in China. The Ürümqi Metro has submitted plans for two lines, Line 1 and Line 2, with an estimated cost of 31.24 billion yuan.

2010 Mentawai earthquake and tsunami

The 2010 Mentawai earthquake occurred with a moment magnitude of 7.8 off the western coast of Sumatra at 21:42 local time (14:42 UTC). The earthquake occurred on the same fault that produced the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. It was widely felt across the provinces of Bengkulu and West Sumatra and resulted in a substantial localized tsunami that struck the Mentawai Islands.

Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge opened

The Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge, also known as the Bong Bridge, connects Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin, via U.S. Highway 2 (US 2). Opened on October 25, 1985, it is roughly 11,800 feet (3,600 m) long, including about 8,300 feet (2,500 m) over water. It crosses the Saint Louis Bay, which drains into Lake Superior. The bridge rises 120 feet above the river to accommodate maritime traffic in a 400-foot-wide navigation channel. The Bong Bridge is one of two connecting Duluth and Superior. A through-arch bridge downstream from the Bong - the John A. Blatnik Bridge - carries Interstate 535 (I-535) over the water.

1963
Karl von Terzaghi died

Karl von Terzaghi was an Austrian mechanical engineer, geotechnical engineer, and geologist known as the "father of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering". Born in Prague (then Austria-Hungary, now Czech Republic), became an American citizen in March 1943. He invented novel equipment as part of the work, and his 1924 book Erdbaumechanik auf Bodenphysikalischer Grundlage (The Mechanics of Earth Construction Based on Soil Physics) had a profound impact on the field. He worked at MIT and Harvard universities and was the first president of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE).
