Line 18 (Guangzhou Metro) opened
Line 18 of the Guangzhou Metro is a rapid transit express line in Guangzhou with trains operating up to 160 km/h (99 mph). It will run in a south-north direction, connecting Wanqingsha in Nansha District, Panyu Square in Panyu District, Modiesha in Haizhu District, Zhujiang New Town and Guangzhou East Railway Station in Tianhe District. The line commenced service on 28 September 2021. Currently, there are train attendants on board each train. In the future, trains will operate fully driverless GoA4 mode when sufficient reliability from the signaling system has been confirmed.
Xuzhou Metro opened
The Xuzhou Metro is a rapid transit system in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, China. Construction began in February 2014, and Line 1 was opened on September 28, 2019, Line 2 was opened on November 28, 2020, and Line 3 was opened on June 28, 2021. By 2020, the network is scheduled to comprise three lines with a total length of about 67 kilometres (42 mi). The total investment is expected to be 44.3 billion renminbi. The system is planned to comprise 11 lines and 323 kilometres (201 mi) of track when fully built out. In its first year of operation the ridership was 7.5 million (2019).
2018 Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami
The 2018 Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami was a shallow, large earthquake struck in the neck of the Minahasa Peninsula, Indonesia, with its epicentre located in the mountainous Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi. The magnitude 7.5 quake was located 70 km (43 mi) away from the provincial capital Palu and was felt as far away as Samarinda on East Kalimantan and also in Tawau, Malaysia. This event was preceded by a sequence of foreshocks, the largest of which was a magnitude 6.1 tremor that occurred earlier that day. Following the mainshock, a tsunami alert was issued for the nearby Makassar Strait. A localised tsunami struck Palu, sweeping shore-lying houses and buildings on its way. The combined effects of the earthquake and tsunami led to the deaths of an estimated 4,340 people.
Suvarnabhumi Airport opened
Suvarnabhumi Airport, also known unofficially as Bangkok International Airport, is the main international airport serving Bangkok, Thailand. Located mostly in Racha Thewa, Bang Phli, Samut Prakan, it covers an area of 3,240 ha (32.4 km2; 8,000 acres), making it one of the biggest international airports in Southeast Asia and a regional hub for aviation. The airport is also a major Cargo Air Freight Hub (20th busiest in 2019), which has a designated Airport Free Zone, as well as road links to the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) on Motorway 7.
Veterans Stadium demolished
The Veterans Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and housed the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Eagles. Its seating capacities were 65,358 for football, and 56,371 for baseball. The stadium opened with a $3 million scoreboard complex that at the time was the most expensive ever installed.
Jiangyin Yangtze River Bridge opened
The Jiangyin Yangtze River Bridge is a suspension bridge over the Yangtze River in Jiangsu, China. The bridge has a main span of 1,385 metres (4,544 ft) connects Jiangyin south of the river to Jingjiang to the north. When the bridge was completed in 1999, it was the fourth longest suspension bridge span in the world and the longest in China. Several longer bridges have since been completed in China and abroad, and it is currently the 15th longest suspension bridge in the world. The bridge was also the furthest downstream on the Yangtze until the completion of the Sutong Yangtze River Bridge in 2008 and the Chongming-Qidong Yangtze River Bridge in 2011.
