The Raffles City Chongqing opened

Located in in Yuzhong District, Chongqing, China, Raffles City Chongqing is a complex of eight towers with a total of 817,000 square metres of floor space. Atop four of the 250-metre-tall towers is an enclosed skyway, called the Crystal. Two 350-metre-tall towers connect to them, each via a cantilever bridge, with two other 250-metre-tall towers being adjacent to these six.

Iosif Vorovich died

Iosif Izrailevich-Girshevich Vorovich was a Soviet and Russian mathematician, scientific engineer, author and was made a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1970. He was a specialist in continuum mechanics and the theory of elasticity. In 1971, Vorovich founded the Research Institute of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics at Rostov State University, Rostov-on-Don, now part of the Southern Federal University, Russia.

Arthur Casagrande died

Born in Austria-Hungary, American civil engineer Arthur Casagrande was an American civil engineer who made important contributions to the fields of engineering geology and geotechnical engineering during its infancy. Renowned for his ingenious designs of soil testing apparatus and fundamental research on seepage and soil liquefaction, he is also credited for developing the soil mechanics teaching programme at Harvard University during the early 1930s that has since been modelled in many universities around the world.

1943 Frankford Junction train wreck

The Frankford Junction train wreck occurred on September 6, 1943, when Pennsylvania Railroad's premier train, the Congressional Limited, crashed at Frankford Junction in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States, killing 79 people and injuring 117 others.
