Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge opened

The Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge is a four-lane automobile bridge spanning the Croatan Sound, between Manns Harbor and Roanoke Island, in Dare County, North Carolina. At a length of 5.2 miles (8.4 km), the Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge is the longest in the state. It travels over .75 miles (1.21 km) of wetlands, with the remaining 4.45 miles (7.16 km) over the Croatan Sound. The bridge rises to 65 feet (20 m) at its apex and is supported by 88 concrete columns and more than 2,000 pilings, which extend 100 feet (30 m) below the water. The bridge deck has 7,250 tons of epoxy-coated reinforcement steel and was designed with a 100-year life span.

Bolte Bridge opened

he Bolte Bridge is a large twin cantilever road bridge in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The Bolte Bridge carries a total of eight lanes of traffic - four lanes northbound and four lanes southbound. While officially only 490 metres in length, the actual structure appears much longer as it forms part of a 5 kilometre elevated roadway between Flemington Road and the West Gate Freeway.

Godavari Bridge opened

The Godavari Bridge or Kovvur-Rajahmundry Bridge is a truss bridge spanning the Godavari River in Rajahmundry, India. It is India's third longest road-cum-rail bridge crossing a water body. The Godavari bridge is 4.1 kilometers (2.8 km rail part & 4.1 km road part) long consisting of 27 spans of 91.5 m and 7 spans of 45.72 m of which 6 spans of 45.72m are in 6 deg. curve at long Rajahmundry end to make up for the built up area.

1906
1906 Valparaíso earthquake

The 1906 Valparaíso earthquake hit Valparaíso, Chile, on August 16 at 19:55 local time. Its epicenter was offshore from the Valparaíso Region, and its intensity was estimated at magnitude 8.2 Mw. Much of Valparaíso was destroyed; there was severe damage in central Chile from Illapel to Talca. The earthquake was felt from Tacna to Puerto Montt. Reports said the earthquake lasted four minutes. A tsunami was also generated. The earthquake killed a reported 3,882 people.

Webster Paulson died

Webster Paulson was an English civil engineer who is known for his work in Malta in the late 19th century. In 1861, he was sent to Malta to supervise the construction of the Royal Opera House in Valletta, which was designed by Edward Middleton Barry. In 1865, he was commissioned as a contractor in the construction of the Holy Trinity Church in Sliema, which was built to designs of Gordon MacDonald Hills. In 1876, he became an Associate of the British Institute of Civil Engineers, later becoming an Associate Member. He was transferred to the Public Works department after the latter's establishment in 1880, and he was involved in numerous projects around Malta.

Roque Ruaño was born

Roque Ruaño Garrido, was a Spanish priest-civil engineer. He was known after he drew up plans for University of Santo Tomas (UST) Main Building, the first earthquake-shock resistant building in Asia, which was constructed at the Sulucan property of the Dominican order in city of Manila.
