Bank of America Tower (Manhattan) construction started
Also known as 1 Bryant Park, the Bank of America Tower is a 55-story skyscraper in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. It was developed by Douglas Durst of the Durst Organization and designed by Cookfox Architects for Bank of America. With a height of 1,200 feet (370 m), the Bank of America Tower is the eighth tallest building in New York City and the tenth tallest building in the United States as of 2023.
Helsinki Metro opened
The Helsinki Metro is a rapid transit system serving Greater Helsinki, Finland. It is the world's northernmost metro system. It was opened to the general public on 2 August 1982 after 27 years of planning. It is operated by Helsinki City Transport for HSL and carries 92.6 million passengers per year. The system consists of 2 lines, serving a total of 30 stations. It has a total length of 43 km (26.7 mi).
Hernando de Soto Bridge opened
Called as the "New Bridge" and the "M Bridge" by Memphians, Hernando de Soto Bridge is a tied-arch bridge carrying Interstate 40 across the Mississippi River between West Memphis, Arkansas, and Memphis, Tennessee. It has a total length is 9,432.6 feet (2,875 m) and its longest span is 900 feet (274 m). The bridge is illuminated at night by LED lighting which can display various color patterns.
1968 Casiguran earthquake
The 1968 Casiguran earthquake occurred on 04:19:22 local time on August 2 with a moment magnitude of 7.6 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent). The thrust earthquake's epicenter was in Casiguran, Quezon (now part of Aurora province). A small non-destructive tsunami was generated and at least 207 people were killed. The majority of the deaths occurred in the collapse of a six-story building in Manila.
Pierre Charles L'Enfant was born
Pierre "Peter" Charles L'Enfant was an American-French military engineer who in 1791 designed the basic plan for Washington, D.C., the capital city of the United States. His work is known today as the L'Enfant Plan. He also inspired the street plan for Detroit, Michigan.
