Xe-Pian Xe-Namnoy Dam collapse
Located in Laos, one of three auxiliary dams of the Xe Pian Xe Namnoy hydroelectric power project collapsed in 2018. On July 22, workers discovered damage on the dam and began evacuated nearby villages. The dam gave way the next day and about 5 million cubic meters of water was released. According to Earth Journalism Network, it is probably the worst structure collapse in the history of the country of Laos.
Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou railway accident
On 23 July 2011, CRH train D3115, running from Hangzhou to Fuzhou South came to a halt over a viaduct near Wenzhou South after losing its power. Shortly afterwards, CRH train D301, running from Beijing South to Fuzhou, rear-ended the stationary D3115. The accident led to 40 deaths and 200+ injured, raising concerns about the safety of the fast-expanding high-speed railway network of China.
Landsat 1 launched
Landsat 1, formerly named ERTS-A and ERTS-1, was the first satellite of the United States' Landsat program. It was a modified version of the Nimbus 4 meteorological satellite and was launched on July 23, 1972, by a Delta 900 rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. It was the first satellite to carry a Multispectral Scanner. The near-polar orbiting spacecraft served as a stabilized, Earth-oriented platform for obtaining information on agricultural and forestry resources, geology and mineral resources, hydrology and water resources, geography, cartography, environmental pollution, oceanography and marine resources, and meteorological phenomena.
