Dalian International Trade Center construction started
The Dalian International Trade Center is a supertall skyscraper in Dalian, Liaoning, China. The Dalian ITC has a total height of 370 m (1,210 ft), with 86 stories.
1952 Kern County earthquake
The 1952 Kern County earthquake occurred on July 21 in the southern San Joaquin Valley and measured 7.3 on the moment magnitude scale. The main shock occurred at 4:52 am Pacific Daylight Time (11:52 UTC), killed 12 people, injured hundreds more and caused an estimated $60 million in property damage. A small sector of damage near Bealville corresponded to a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI (Extreme), though this intensity rating was not representative of the majority of damage.
Washington Roebling died
American civil engineer Washington Augustus Roebling is best known for supervising the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge (a bridge designed by his father, John A. Roebling). He also had a hobby of collecting rocks and minerals, his collection numbering 16,000 specimens and being donated to the Smithsonian Institution.
365 Crete earthquake
The 365 Crete earthquake occurred at about sunrise on 21 July 365 in the Eastern Mediterranean, with an assumed epicentre near Crete. Geologists today estimate the undersea earthquake to have been a moment magnitude 8.5 or higher. The earthquake was followed by a paleotsunami which devastated the southern and eastern coasts of the Mediterranean, particularly Libya, Alexandria, and the Nile Delta, killing thousands and hurling ships 3 km (1.9 mi) inland.
