Tiware Dam
On 2 July 2019, the Tiware dam in Ratnagiri district of Maharastra state of India failed following heavy rains. The failure resulted in flooding of the villages situated downstream. At least 19 people died, and four went missing.
2013 Aceh earthquake
The 2013 Aceh earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra on 2 July with a moment magnitude of 6.1 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VI (Strong). The strike-slip earthquake killed at least 43 people and injured more than 2,500 others n the province of Aceh (on the northern end of Sumatra) where approximately 4,300 homes were damaged or destroyed.
Estadio Monumental "U" opened
The Estadio Monumental is a football stadium in the district of Ate in Lima, Peru. It is the home of Club Universitario de Deportes, and it was opened in 2000 to replace the Estadio Teodoro Lolo Fernandez. Its only legal owner is the club itself. Designed by Progreso International and Gremco S.A., Uruguayan architect Walter Lavalleja Sarries led the construction of the stadium. At the time of its construction, it became Peru's largest stadium and also the 5th largest in South America. Since its expansion to 80,000 capacity in early 2020s, it has become the second-largest stadium by seating capacity on the continent. The stadium was built in accordance with FIFA's manual of technical specifications for World Cup finals.
William Louis Marshall died
William Louis Marshall was an influential figure in the US Corps of Engineers. He oversaw improvements on the Lower Mississippi River near Vicksburg and on the Fox-Wisconsin Waterway canal system in Wisconsin. As Chicago District Engineer from 1888 to 1899, he planned and began to build the Illinois and Mississippi Canal. Marshall made innovative use of concrete masonry and developed original and cost-saving methods of canal lock construction. Stationed at New York (1900-08), he directed the Ambrose Channel project and the standardizing of fortification construction methods. He retired June 11, 1910 as the final Chief of Engineers to have served in the Civil War.
Mario Schenberg was born
Mario Schenberg was a Brazilian electrical engineer, physicist, art critic and writer. Together with Indian physicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar he discovered and published in 1942 the so-called Schonberg-Chandrasekhar limit, which is the maximum mass of the core of a star that can support the overlying layers against gravitational collapse, once the core hydrogen is exhausted. Schenberg also contributed to quantum phyrics and geometric algebra
1840 Ahora earthquake
The 1840 Ahora earthquake occurred on 2 July at 16:00 local time, affecting Agri Province in the Eastern Anatolia Region of present-day Turkey and Armenia. The earthquake had an epicenter near Mount Ararat, where it triggered an eruption and caused a landslide that destroyed villages. A total of 10,000 people were killed by the earthquake and its damaging aftershocks. Earthquake catalogs place the surface-wave magnitude at Ms 7.4 and maximum Modified Mercalli intensity scale assigned IX (Violent).
