Lupu Bridge inaugurated
The Lupu Bridge, named after Luwan District, is a through arch bridge over the Huangpu River in Shanghai, China, connecting the city's Huangpu and Pudong districts. It is the world's third longest steel arch bridge, after the Ping'nan Third Bridge in Guangxi and the Chaotianmen Bridge in Chongqing. The bridge has a total length including approach spans of 3,900 m (12,795 ft) and opened on June 28, 2003. The main bridge structure is 750m long including the two side spans of 100m each, and the main span of 550 metres (1,804 ft) over the Huangpu River is 32 metres (105 ft) longer than the previous record holder for the longest arch bridge, the New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville, West Virginia. It cost 2.5 billion yuan (US$302 million), including US$78.04 for the main steel structure alone.
Catania Metro opened
The Catania Metro is a rapid transit system serving the coastal city of Catania, Sicily, in Southern Italy. One of Italy's seven metro systems, it is the only one in Sicily and Europe's southernmost system. It was also the first metro on an island in the Mediterranean Sea, and is now one of two, with the Palma Metro becoming the second in 2007, although it was only the fifth in a city on the Mediterranean, after Athens (1904), Barcelona (1924), Marseille (1977), and Naples (1993).
The Shun Hing Square opened
Shun Hing Square is a 384-meter (1,260 ft)-tall skyscraper in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, China. Upon its completion in 1996, it became the tallest building in China, until being surpassed by CITIC Plaza next year.
Hurricane Audrey
Hurricane Audrey was one of the deadliest tropical cyclones in U.S. history, killing at least 416 people in its devastation of the southwestern Louisiana coast in 1957. On June 27, the hurricane reached peak sustained winds of 125 mph (205 km/h), making it a major hurricane.
Giorgio Costantino Schinas died
Giorgio Costantino Schinas was a Maltese architect and civil engineer. His most notable works are the Parish Church of St. Cajetan (1869-75) in Hamrun and a water pumping station at Luqa. In the former, he used a combination of a number of architectural styles, including Gothic Revival and Baroque. He also planned a Romanesque Revival turret-like structure instead of a dome, but this was not built.
