Padma Bridge opened
The Padma Multipurpose Bridge is a two-level road-rail bridge across the Padma River, the main distributary of the Ganges in Bangladesh. The bridge is the longest bridge in Bangladesh, the longest bridge over the river Ganges by both span and total length, and features the highest pile depth of any bridge in the world at 120 m (390 ft). It is the deepest bridge in the world, with piles installed as deep as 127 metres. The construction of the bridge was considered to be especially challenging due to width and depth of the Padma River.

Panama Canal expansion project opened
The project involved the construction of a new set of locks to accommodate larger ships, and it was one of the largest civil engineering projects in recent times. Located in Panama, the Panama Canal is an artificial 82 km (51 mi) waterway that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean and divides North and South America. Initially controlled by the United States, the canal was taken over by the Panamanian government in 1999. It has a length of 82 km (51 miles) and has been ranked by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the seven wonders of the modern world.
Lord Kelvin was born
William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin, or Lord Kelvin, was a British mathematician, mathematical physicist and engineer born in Belfast. Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow for 53 years, he did important work in the mathematical analysis of electricity and formulation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics, and did much to unify the emerging discipline of physics in its contemporary form. He received the Royal Society's Copley Medal in 1883, was its president 1890-1895, and in 1892 was the first British scientist to be elevated to the House of Lords.
Jan Pawel Lelewel was born
Jan Pawel Lelewel was a Polish military and civil engineer, builder, and painter. In 1823, he was responsible for the rebuilding works at Zamość Fortress. Subsequently, he took part in the building of Augustow Canal. He took part in Polish November Uprising, in which he was in charge of maintaining fortifications in Praga, then a suburb of Warsaw. He began his military duty as a captain and ended it as a lieutenant colonel.
