Tianjin Metro new system opened
The Tianjin Metro or Tianjin Rail Transit is the rapid transit system in the city of Tianjin, which was the second city in mainland China after Beijing to operate a subway system (the Beijing Subway opened in 1971). First opened in 1984, the system currently has 8 operating lines and 205 stations spanning 296.6 km (184.3 mi).
Silvanus P. Thompson died
Silvanus Phillips Thompson was an English professor of physics at the City and Guilds Technical College in Finsbury, England. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1891 and was known for his work as an electrical engineer and as an author. Thompson's most enduring publication is his 1910 text Calculus Made Easy, which teaches the fundamentals of infinitesimal calculus, and is still in print.
1899 New Richmond tornado
The 1899 New Richmond tornado was an estimated F5 tornado which formed on the early evening of Monday, June 12, 1899, and tore a 45-mile path of destruction through the St. Croix, Polk and Barron counties in west-central Wisconsin. It caused 117 fatalities, twice as many injured, and hundreds homeless. As of 2019, it ranks as the ninth deadliest tornado in United States history, as well as the deadliest ever recorded in Wisconsin.
Tachu Naito was born
Tachu Naito was a Japanese architect, engineer, and professor. He was a father of earthquake-proof design and built many broadcasting and observation towers, including the Tokyo Tower.
Maurice Perrault was born
Maurice Perrault was a Canadian architect, civil engineer, and politician. Working for his fathers company, Perrault et Mesnard, he was involved in the design of Sainte-Cécile, Sainte-Anne, Saint-Antoine and Saint-Charles among other projects. In 1888, Perrault, who was of Liberal allegiance, was appointed chief architect for the district of Montreal by Premier Honoré Mercier. Perrault was also a member of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers and designed Laval University.
John A. Roebling was born
John Augustus Roebling was a German-born American civil engineer. He designed and built wire rope suspension bridges, in particular the Brooklyn Bridge, which has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
