2008 Lake Delton draining
Located in Sauk County in central Wisconsin, Lake Delton is a man-made freshwater lake that was formed in 1927 to attract tourists to the area. On June 9, 2008, under the pressure of floods in the area, a portion of a county highway that forms part of the dike wall eroded, causing the lake to empty into the Wisconsin River. The lake is now completely refilled and has been usable since Memorial Day weekend of 2009.
Humen Pearl River Bridge opened
Connecting the Nansha District of Guangzhou to Humen Town of Dongguan in Guangdong Province, southern China, Humen Pearl River Bridge consists of two main spans - a suspension bridge section and a segmental concrete section. Completed in 1997, the suspension bridge has a main span of 888 meters, and the segmental concrete section's main span of 237 meters is among the longest such spans in the world.
1972 Black Hills flood
One of the deadliest floods in U.S. history, The Black Hills Flood took place on June 9-10, 1972 in the Black Hills of Western South Dakota. 15 inches (380 mm) of rain in a small area over the Black Hills caused Rapid Creek and other waterways to overflow, leading to severe flooding of residential and commercial properties in Rapid City. The disaster resulted in 238 deaths and 3,057 injuries, with over 1,335 homes and 5,000 automobiles destroyed.
George Stephenson was born
Renowned as the "Father of Railways", British civil engineer and mechanical engineer George Stephenson was considered by the Victorians as a great example of diligent application and thirst for improvement. Along with his son Robert's company Robert Stephenson and Company, he built Locomotion No. 1, which was the first steam locomotive to carry passengers on a public rail line, the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825. He also built the first public inter-city railway line in the world to use locomotives, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which opened in 1830.
