Mumbai Metro opened

Serving the city of Mumbai in Maharashtra, India, Mumbai Metro is the sixth longest operational metro network in India with three lines, 43 stations and an operational length of 46.4 km (28.8 mi) as of January 2023. With overall completion expected in October 2026, the core system will comprise fourteen high-capacity metro railway lines and one metrolite line, spanning a total of 356.972 kilometres (221.812 mi), and serviced by 286 stations.

The Marina Torch opened

The Marina Torch is a residential skyscraper in Dubai Marina. It is 352 meters (1,155 ft) tall, with 86 floors above ground, and was the tallest residential building in the world on its completion in 2011, surpassing Q1 in Gold Coast, Australia.

Hangzhou Bay Bridge construction started

Built across the mouth of Hangzhou Bay in the eastern coastal region of China, Hangzhou Bay Bridge is a long 35.7 km (22.2 mi) highway bridge with two separate cable-stayed portions. Ranked among the ten longest trans-oceanic bridges, the bridge shortened the highway travel distance between Ningbo and Shanghai from 400 km (249 mi) to 180 km (112 mi) and reduced travel time from 4 to 2 hours.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport opened

Located in in Houston, Texas, United States, George Bush Intercontinental Airport is the busiest airport in Texas for international passenger traffic and number of international destinations. It was renamed after George H. W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States and resident of Houston, in 1997. The airport covers 10,000 acres (40 square kilometres) of land and has five runways.

Gridley J. F. Bryant died

Boston architect, builder, and industrial engineer Gridley James Fox Bryant was one of the most influential architects in New England. Bryant was a leading proponent of the Boston "Granite Style", since he often used granite for increased stability. Among his most notable works were the Massachusetts State House and the Hathorn Hall at Bates College.

Robert Stevenson was a Scottish civil engineer, and designer and builder of lighthouses.

John Smeaton was born

John Smeaton was a British civil engineer responsible for the design of bridges, canals, harbours and lighthouses. He was also a capable mechanical engineer and an eminent physicist. Smeaton was the first self-proclaimed "civil engineer", and is often regarded as the "father of civil engineering". He pioneered the use of hydraulic lime in concrete, using pebbles and powdered brick as aggregate.

Giovanni Domenico Cassini was born

Giovanni Domenico Cassini, also known as Jean-Dominique Cassini was an Italian (naturalised French) mathematician, astronomer and engineer. Cassini was born in Perinaldo, near Imperia, at that time in the County of Nice, part of the Savoyard state. Cassini is known for his work on astronomy and engineering. He discovered four satellites of the planet Saturn and noted the division of the rings of Saturn; the Cassini Division was named after him. Giovanni Domenico Cassini was also the first of his family to begin work on the project of creating a topographic map of France.
