2015 Sabah earthquake
The 2015 Sabah earthquake struck Ranau, Sabah, Malaysia with a moment magnitude of 6.0 and lasted for 30 seconds. The earthquake was the strongest to affect Malaysia since the 1976 Sabah earthquake.
Tropical Storm Allison
Tropical Storm Allison was a tropical storm that devastated southeast Texas in June of the 2001 Atlantic hurricane season. At 1200 UTC on June 5, the disturbance developed a broad, low-level circulation, and was classified as Tropical Storm Allison, the first storm of the 2001 Atlantic hurricane season.
Second Severn Crossing opened
Officially renamed the Prince of Wales Bridge, the Second Severn Crossing is the M4 motorway bridge over the River Severn between England and Wales. The bridge has a total length of 5,128 metres (16,824 ft) and a main span of 456 metres (1,496 ft).
Teton Dam failure
Located in eastern Idaho, United States, Teton Dam suffered a catastrophic failure on June 5, 1976, as it was filling for the first time. The collapse of Teton Dam resulted in eleven deaths, and killed 16,000 livestock. Total damage estimates have ranged up to $2 billion, and the dam was not rebuilt.
Suez Canal opens after Six-Day War closure
After Egypt closed the Suez Canal at the beginning of the Six-Day War on 5 June 1967, the canal remained closed for precisely eight years, reopening on 5 June 1975. The impact of the closure was heavy, since oil through the Suez Canal accounted for 60% of Italy's, 39% of France's, and 25% of Britain's total oil consumption in 1966 before the canal was closed.
William Scamp was born
William Scamp was an English architect and engineer. After working on the reconstruction of Windsor Castle to designs of Sir Jeffry Wyatville, he was employed by the Admiralty from 1838 to his retirement in 1867. Throughout his career of almost three decades, Scamp designed naval facilities in Britain, Malta, Gibraltar and Bermuda. He oversaw the construction of St Paul's Pro-Cathedral, making significant alterations to the building in the process.
