1970 Ancash earthquake
The 1970 Ancash earthquake occurred off the coast of Peru, in the Pacific Ocean. Combined with a resultant landslide, it is the most catastrophic natural disaster in the history of Peru. Due to the large amounts of snow and ice included in the landslide that caused an estimated 66,000-70,000 casualties, it is also considered to be the world's deadliest avalanche.
1935 Quetta earthquake
The 1935 Quetta earthquake occurred in Quetta, Balochistan, British India (now Pakistan). The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.7 Mw and anywhere between 30,000 and 60,000 people died from the impact. It was the deadliest earthquake to strike South Asia until 2005.
South Fork Dam failure / Johnstown flood
Located near South Fork, Pennsylvania, United States, the South Fork Dam was an earthenwork dam that gave way on May 31, 1889, after several days of unprecedented rainfall. The incident led to the release of 14.55 million cubic meters of water, flooding several cities (most notably Jamestown) and killing 2,208 people.
Madison Square Garden opened
Madison Square Garden (1879-1890) was an arena in New York City at the northeast corner of East 26th Street and Madison Avenue in Manhattan. The first venue to use that name, it seated 10,000 spectators. It was replaced with a new building on the same site.
