May 1998 Afghanistan earthquake
An earthquake occurred in northern Afghanistan, in the Takhar Province with a moment magnitude of 6.5 and a maximum modified Mercalli intensity of VII (Very strong). The disaster resulted in 4,000-4,500 dead, 10,000 injured and 45,000 homeless.
Leo Szilard died
Leo Szilard was a Hungarian-German-American physicist and inventor. He conceived the nuclear chain reaction in 1933 and, together with Enrico Fermi, patented the idea of a nuclear fission reactor in 1944. Also Szilard coined and submitted the earliest known patent applications and the first publications for the concepts of electron microscope (1928), the linear accelerator (1928), and the cyclotron (1929) in Germany, proving him as the originator of the idea of these devices.
Auckland Harbour Bridge opened
The Auckland Harbour Bridge is an eight-lane motorway bridge over the Waitematā Harbour in Auckland, New Zealand. It joins St Marys Bay on the Auckland city side with Northcote on the North Shore side. While the original inner four lanes, opened in 1959, are of box truss construction, the two lanes that were added to each side in 1968-1969 are of orthotropic box structure construction and are cantilevered off the original piers.
Gatwick Airport opened
Located near Crawley, West Sussex, England, London Gatwick (also known as Gatwick Airport) is a secondary international airport serving London. It covers a total area of 674 hectares (1,670 acres), and it was the second-busiest airport by total passenger traffic in the UK for the year 2022, after Heathrow Airport, and the 8th-busiest in Europe by total passenger traffic.
