2006 Yogyakarta earthquake
The 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake had a moment magnitude of 6.4 and a maximum MSK intensity of VIII (Damaging). Several factors (favorable conditions for soil liquefaction, substandard construction practices, high population density) led to a disproportionate amount of damage and number of casualties for the size of the shock, with more than 5,700 dead, tens of thousands injured, and financial losses of Rp 29.1 trillion ($3.1 billion).
The Golden Gate Bridge opened
One of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco and California, the distinctive colored Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge that links the U.S. city of San Francisco, California to Marin County, carrying both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 across the strait. With a total length of 8,980 ft (2,737 m), a main span is 4,200 feet (1,280 m) and a total height of 746 feet (227 m), it was both the longest and the tallest suspension bridge in the world at the time of its opening.
Chrysler Building opened
The Chrysler Building is an Art Deco skyscraper on the East Side of Manhattan in New York City, at the intersection of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. At 1,046 ft (319 m), it is the tallest brick building in the world with a steel framework, and it was the world's tallest building for 11 months after its completion in 1930.
William Stanier was born
British railway engineer Sir William Arthur Stanier, was chief mechanical engineer of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). He reversed the small engine policy of LMS, introducing modern and more powerful locomotive designs.
