Sutong Yangtze River Bridge opened to traffic
Located in Jiangsu province, China, Sutong Yangtze Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that spans the Yangtze river between the cities of Nantong and Changshu. With a span of 1,088 metres (3,570 ft), it was the cable-stayed bridge with the longest main span in the world from 2008 to 2012. It was opened to traffic on 25 May 2008 and was officially opened on 30 June 2008.
NASA's Phoenix lander touches down on Mars
Phoenix was an uncrewed space probe that landed on the surface of Mars to assess the local habitability and to research the history of water on Mars. The mission had two goals. One was to study the geological history of water, the key to unlocking the story of past climate change. The second was to evaluate past or potential planetary habitability in the ice-soil boundary.
1985 Bangladesh cyclone
Tropical Storm One was an extremely deadly cyclone which developed in the central Bay of Bengal on May 22, strengthened to a peak of 70 mph winds before hitting Bangladesh on the 25th. The storm brought torrential rains and flooding, killing around 11,069 people and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless.
1955 Great Plains tornado outbreak
The 1955 Great Plains tornado outbreak was a deadly tornado outbreak that struck the southern and central U.S Great Plains States. It produced at least 47 tornadoes across seven states including two F5 tornadoes in Blackwell, Oklahoma, and Udall, Kansas that caused most of the casualties. The outbreak killed 102 people while injuring hundreds more.
