Munich Airport opened
Located 28.5 km (17.7 mi) northeast of Munich near the town of Freising, Munich Airport is the second-busiest airport in Germany and the ninth-busiest airport in Europe in terms of passenger traffic. In 1992 it replaced Munich's previous airport, Munich-Riem Airport, and is fully equipped to handle wide-body aircraft including the Airbus A380.
Möhne and Edersee dams destroyed
The Möhne and Edersee dams were breached as a result of Operation Chastise, commonly known as the Dambusters Raid. The operation was carried out by British RAF, using special "bouncing bombs" to breach dam walls. The collapse of the dams caused catastrophic flooding, with an estimated 1,600 civilians killed by the flooding. Two hydroelectric power stations were destroyed and several more damaged.
The Erie Canal was first used
Historic upstate New York Erie Canal runs east-west between the Hudson River and Lake Erie. Completed in 1825, the canal was the first navigable waterway connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, vastly reducing the costs of transporting people and goods across the Appalachians. Today it is mainly used by recreational watercraft.
Amos Eaton was born
American botanist, geologist, and educator Amos Eaton had, among other things, important contributions to geology. He produced A Geological Survey of the County of Albany, which was followed by geological surveys of much of the area through which Erie Canal was built. An established public speaker, he was appointed by Van Rensselaer to teach chemistry, experimental philosophy, geology and surveying at the Rensselaer School.
