Adana Metro opened

Serving Adana, Turkey, the Adana Metro is a 13.5 km (8.4 mi) rail rapid transit system. It consists of 13 stations and its tunnels were built a few meters deeper than the underground water level (12 m).

Silver Lake Dam failure

Affected by 4 to 5 inches (10 to 13 cm) of rain that fell within 48 hours, the dam failed and released nine billion gallons of water from Silver Lake Basin. The cause was the failure of the earthen fuse plug spillway. The failure forced the evacuation of 1800 people from 485 acres (196 ha) on the north side of Marquette. The subsequent flooding caused over $100 million in damages, but resulted in no deaths or injuries.

Jacques Cartier Bridge opened

Connecting Montreal Island with Longueuil at Quebec, Canada, Jacques Cartier Bridge is a 3,425.6 m (11,239 ft) five-lane highway bridge. A steel truss cantilever bridge, it the third busiest bridge in Canada by vehicular traffic. Its name was given in honor of the French-Breton maritime explorer Jacques Cartier, who was the first European to sail the river crossed by the bridge.

Constantinos Doxiadis was born

The Greek architect Constantinos Doxiadis was a pioneer of modern town planning. He is known for his work on the master plan for Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan.

Hans Albert Einstein was born

Hans Albert Einstein as a Swiss-American engineer and educator, the second child and first son of physicists Albert Einstein and Mileva Marić. Born in Bern, Switzerland, he was a long-time professor of hydraulic engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. Einstein was widely recognized for his research on sediment transport. To honor his outstanding achievement in hydraulic engineering, the American Society of Civil Engineers established the "Hans Albert Einstein Award" in 1988.

Archie Alexander was born

Archibald Alphonso Alexander was an American architect and engineer. He was an early African-American graduate of the University of Iowa and the first to graduate from the University of Iowa's College of Engineering. He was also a governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
