Soma mine disaster

Blasting at Eynez coal mine in Soma, Manisa, Turkey, caused an underground mine fire, which burned until 15 May. In total, 301 people were killed in what was the worst mine disaster in Turkey's history.

1996 Bangladesh tornado

The 1996 Bangladesh tornado was a deadly and destructive tornado that struck 80 - 90 villages in north-central Bangladesh, leaving more than 600 fatalities with over 37,248 injured, and 36,420 houses were extensively damaged. The tornado left 100,000 people homeless.

1980 Kalamazoo tornado

The Kalamazoo Tornado of 1980 struck downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan, on Tuesday, May 13, 1980. The tornado was rated F3 on the Fujita scale, caused 5 fatalities and 79 people injured as well as an estimated damage of $50,000,000.

Iruka Lake Dam collapse

Located near the Meiji Mura theme park in Inuyama, Aichi, Japan, Lake Iruka is one of the largest man-made lakes in Japan. In 1868 the dam holding the reservoir collapsed after heavy rain. In the resulting flood, 941 people lost their lives.

Pakistan's first railway line opens

Pakistan's (then part of British India) first railway opened from Karachi to Kotri. Work on the railway began in April 1858, and Karachi and Kotri - a distance of 108 miles (174 km) - were connected by rail on 13 May 1861.
