May 2015 Nepal earthquake
A 7.3 Mw earthquake occurred 18 kilometres (11 mi) southeast of Kodari in Nepal. Despite its magnitude, it is considered to be an aftershock of a 7.8 Mw quake that had struck the region a few days earlier. It resulted in 218 dead and more than 3,500 injured.
2008 Sichuan earthquake
Hitting Sichuan province, China, the 7.9 Mw earthquake ruptured the fault for over 240 km (150 mi), with surface displacements of several meters. The earthquake also caused the largest number of geohazards ever recorded, including about 200,000 landslides and more than 800 quake lakes distributed over an area of 110,000 km2 (42,000 sq mi). Over 69,000 people lost their lives in the deadliest earthquake to hit China since 1976.
San Bernardino train disaster
Also known as the Duffy Street incident, it was a runaway train derailment occurred on May 12, 1989. A 6-locomotive/69-car Southern Pacific freight train that was transporting trona, lost control while descending Cajon Pass, derailed on an elevated curve and plowed into a residential area on Duffy Street. The incident led to the death of two members of the train crew and two residents.
Luigi Vanvitelli was born
Italian architect and painter Luigi Vanvitelli was the most prominent 18th-century architect of Italy. Amongst his notable works were the Royal Palace of Caserta, the Lazzaretto of Ancona and the Chapel of St. John the Baptist in the Church of Saint Roch in Lisbon.
