Patel Dam failure

Located near the township of Solai, Nakuru County, in Kenya's Rift Valley, the Patel Milmet Dam was a privately owned embankment dam. The dam burst burst amid heavy rains in the evening of 9 May 2018, killing at least 48 people.

Henry Bachtold died

Henry Bachtold was an Australian soldier and railway engineer. Bachtold commanded the engineers of the 5th Australian Division in 1917-18 and the engineers of the 3rd Australian Division in 1918. Later he was appointed as Assistant Chief Civil Engineer at the Department of Railways New South Wales.

James Laurie was born

American engineer and one of the founders of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) James Laurie was born in Scotland but he moved to Boston when he was 21 years old. He performed surveying, bridge design, and route design for a number of railroads in New England. He was appointed president of ASCE for two years and was the first to present a paper to the society.

Gaspard Monge was born

Gaspard Monge, Comte de Péluse was a French mathematician, commonly presented as the inventor of descriptive geometry, the mathematical basis of technical drawing, and the father of differential geometry. He was also involved in the reform of the French educational system, helping to found the École Polytechnique.
