Doha Metro opened
Serving Qatar's capital city, Doha, the Doha Metro is a rapid transit system which became operational on 8 May 2019. 21 TBMs were used to cut tunnels 20 meters beneath the city for the lines. It is served by some of the fastest driverless trains in the world, which are capable of reaching 100 km/h (62 mph).
The Marina Torch was completed
Also known as Dubai Torch Tower, the Marina Torch is a 86-story residential skyscraper in Dubai Marina in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. With a height of 352 metres (1,155 ft), it was the tallest residential building in the world on its completion in 2011.
Vienna U-Bahn test operation
Vienna U-Bahn is the rapid transit system that serves Vienna, Austria. The system as of 2023 consists of five lines with two of them dating back to the Stadtbahn ("city railway") system, which opened in 1898. The total length of the network is 78.5 kilometres (48.8 mi) and includes 98 stations.
Thomas Stevenson died
Pioneering Scottish civil engineer, lighthouse designer and meteorologist Thomas Stevenson designed over thirty lighthouses in and around Scotland. He also invented Stevenson screen used in meteorology as part of a standard weather station.
Johan Jensen was born
Johan Ludwig William Valdemar Jensen, mostly known as Johan Jensen was a Danish mathematician and engineer. He was the president of the Danish Mathematical Society from 1892 to 1903. Jensen is mostly renowned for his famous inequality, Jensen's inequality.
