Hagia Sophia dome collapsed
Hagia Sophia is a mosque in Istanbul, Turkey (then Constantinople, Byzantine Empire), originally built as an Eastern Orthodox church by the Byzantine emperor Justinian I. The dome of Hagia Sophia collapsed during a subsequent earthquake, 20 years after it was built. The collapse was due mainly to the excessive bearing load and to the enormous shear load of the dome, which was too flat. It was later restored using lighter materials and different dome type.
