The Channel Tunnel opened
Located beneath the English Channel at the Strait of Dover, the Channel Tunnel is a 50.46-kilometre (31.35 mi) underwater railway tunnel that connects Folkestone (Kent, England, UK) with Coquelles (Hauts-de-France, France). With an underwater section of 37.9 kilometres (23.5 mi), the tunnel carries high-speed Eurostar passenger trains, the Eurotunnel Shuttle for road vehicles and international freight trains. It consists of two rail tunnels and a service tunnel, for the drilling of which eleven tunnel boring machines (TBMs) were used.
1976 Friuli earthquake
The 1976 Friuli earthquake had a moment magnitude of 6.5 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of X (Extreme). 990 people were killed, up to about 3,000 were injured, and more than 157,000 were left homeless from it.
Conde McCullough died
American civil engineer Conde Balcom McCullough is primarily known for designing many of Oregon's coastal bridges on U.S. Route 101. He helped design over 600 bridges, with his designs noted for their architectural beauty.

Emanuele Luigi Galizia was a Maltese architect and civil engineer, who designed many public buildings and several churches. He is regarded as "the principal Maltese architect throughout the second half of the nineteenth century".
