Tornado outbreak of May 4-6, 2007

The most destructive tornado in the outbreak occurred on the evening of May 4 in western Kansas, where about 95% of the city of Greensburg in Kiowa County was destroyed by an EF5 tornado, the first of such intensity since the 1999 Bridge Creek-Moore tornado.

Oroville Dam opened

Located east of the city of Oroville, California, Oroville Dam is an earthfill embankment dam on the Feather River. Built by the California Department of Water Resources, Oroville Dam is one of the key features of the California State Water Project. Besides water supply, it also serves for flood control and electricity generation, employing three conventional turbines and three pump-generators. It is the tallest dam in the U.S with a height of 770 feet (235 m).

Panama Canal construction begins

Located in Panama, the Panama Canal is an artificial 82 km (51 mi) waterway that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean and divides North and South America. Initially controlled by the United States, the canal was taken over by the Panamanian government in 1999. It has a length of 82 km (51 miles) and has been ranked by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

Cornwall Railway opens from Plymouth to Truro

Famous for the majestic Royal Albert Bridge over the River Tamar, the Cornwall Railway was a 7 ft 14 in (2,140 mm) broad gauge railway from Plymouth in Devon to Falmouth in Cornwall, England. Initially the line opened for passenger trains only, with freight trains starting a few months later.
