The International Commerce Centre was completed
Located in in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, the International Commerce Centre is a 108-story, 484 m (1,588 ft) supertall skyscraper. Besides being Hong Kong's tallest skyscraper, it is the world's 13th tallest by height and 10th tallest by number of floors.
1999 Oklahoma tornado outbreak
On May 3 the southwestern portion of Oklahoma City is devastated by an F5 tornado, killing forty-five people, injuring 665, and causing $1 billion in damage.
Royal Festival Hall opens
The Royal Festival Hall is a 2,700-seat concert, dance and talks venue within Southbank Centre in London. It was inaugurated along with the Festival of Britain on 3 May 1951.
Matt Baldwin was born
Mathew Martyn Baldwin was a petroleum engineer. He and classmate George Knoll formed Baldwin and Knoll, a well servicing company that became Canada's largest service rig company for three decades. He was a founding director of Alberta Energy Company, serving for 25 years, and in 2000 named a member of the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame.
Istvan Turr died
Istvan Turr was a Hungarian soldier, revolutionary, canal architect and engineer. Turr was deeply involved with the Panama Canal at its earlier stage, being himself the President of the "Societe Civile Internationale du Canal Interoceanique" that proposed to build it. After 1881, Turr and Gerster were involved with the Greek Government's major project of planning and implementing the Corinth Canal, a project that gained considerable international attention.
Henri Pitot was born
Henri Pitot was a French hydraulic engineer and the inventor of the pitot tube. He also designed the Aqueduc de Saint-Clément near Montpellier and the extension of Pont du Gard in Nîmes.
