The Bank of America Tower (Manhattan) was completed

Also known as 1 Bryant Park, the Bank of America Tower is a 55-story skyscraper in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. It was developed by Douglas Durst of the Durst Organization and designed by Cookfox Architects for Bank of America. With a height of 1,200 feet (370 m), the Bank of America Tower is the eighth tallest building in New York City and the tenth tallest building in the United States as of 2023.

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport opened

Abbreviated SHIA or Soetta, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is the primary airport serving the Jakarta metropolitan area on the island of Java in Indonesia. It commenced domestic operations on 1 May 1985 replacing the old over-capacity Kemayoran Airport. The airport's terminal 1 and 2 were designed by French architect Paul Andreu, who also designed Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris.

Mina Plakalnitsa dam failure

Located in the village of Sgorigrad, near the city of Vratsa, Bulgaria, a tailings dam at Plakalnitsa copper mine failed, leading the nearby towns to be inundated by 450,000 cubic meters of mud and water. Although the official death toll is 107, the unofficial estimate is that the event caused more than 480 deaths.

Empire State Building opened

The Empire State Building is a 102-story Art Deco skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. With a total height of 1,454 ft (443.2 m), it includes three observatories and 73 elevators. The building was designed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon and built from 1930 to 1931. It opened on May 1, 1931, under the presidency of Herbert Hoover.

Benjamin Henry Latrobe was born

Anglo-American neoclassical architect Benjamin Henry Boneval Latrobe has been called the "father of American architecture". Among others, he designed the United States Capitol, the Old Baltimore Cathedral and the White House porticos.
