Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway opened
The Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) is an 8.9-kilometer (5.5 mi) toll bridge expressway in Metro Cebu, Philippines. It is the longest and tallest bridge in the Philippines, with its longest span being 390 m (1,280 ft).
Hamad International Airport opened
Located east of Qatar capital, Doha, it is Qatar's principal and main national airport and the home of Qatar's flag carrier airline, Qatar Airways. The development of the airport was carried out by Bechtel Corporation.
Puentes Dam failure
Located in Lorca, Murcia, Spain, the failure of the dam led to 608 dead. 1,800 houses and 40,000 trees were destroyed.
Carl Friedrich Gauss was born
German mathematician and physicist Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss is sometimes referred to as "the greatest mathematician since antiquity". Gauss had an exceptional influence in many fields of mathematics and science, proving the fundamental theorem of algebra and inventing the fast Fourier transform algorithm and the method of least squares, among others. Furthermore, Gauss invented the heliotrope in 1821, magnetometer in 1833, and alongside Wilhelm Eduard Weber, invented the first electromagnetic telegraph in 1833.
