Kanagaratnam Sriskandan died

Kanagaratnam Sriskandan was a Sri Lankan born British engineer and civil servant. He was the former Chief Highway Engineer, of Under Secretary Grade at the British Department for Transport. He was member of the team that assessed proposals for the channel tunnel and director of the Mott MAcdonald Group.

Bogibeel Bridge construction started

Located in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, the Bogibeel Bridge is a combined road and rail bridge over the Brahmaputra River. The bridge is the longest rail-cum-road bridge in India, measuring 4.94 kilometres over the Brahmaputra river and taking 200 months to construct.

Shun Hing Square construction started

The 69-story Shun Hing Square, also known as "Di Wang Tower", is a 384-meter (1,260 ft)-tall skyscraper in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, China. Upon its completion in 1996, it became the tallest building in China, until being surpassed by CITIC Plaza next year.

Alice Perry died

Alice Jacqueline Perry was one of the first women in Europe to graduate with a degree in engineering. After graduating from the High School in Galway, she won a scholarship to study at Queen's College Galway in 1902. Having excelled in mathematics, she changed from studying for a degree in arts to an engineering degree. She graduated with first class honours in civil engineering in 1906.

Brasília is officially inaugurated

Located high in the Brazilian highlands in the country's Central-West region, Brasília was founded by President Juscelino Kubitschek on 21 April 1960, to serve as the new federal capital of Brazil. Brasília was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 due to its modernist architecture and uniquely artistic urban planning.
