2013 Lushan earthquake

The Lushan earthquake or Ya'an earthquake was placed at Ms 7.0 by China Earthquake Data Center, Ms 7.0 by Russian Academy of Sciences, Mw 7.0 by Geoscience Australia, Mw 6.6 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Mw 6.6 by the European Alert System (EMSC) and Mj 6.9 by the Japan Meteorological Agency. The event was followed by 1,815 aftershocks and resulted in 193 dead, 23 missing and over 15,000 injured.

Sunshine Skyway Bridge opened

The Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge consists of a pair of long beam bridges with a central cable-stayed bridge that spans Lower Tampa Bay to connect St. Petersburg, Florida to Terra Ceia. Its total length is 4.14 miles (6.7 km) and its longest span is 1,200 feet (366 m). The four-lane bridge is considered the flagship bridge of Florida and serves as a gateway to Tampa Bay.

Kantale Dam failure

Built in Kantale, Trincomalee District, Sri Lanka, the Kantale Dam is a large embankment dam used for irrigation. On 20 April 1986, caused mainly by extra-heavy vehicles being driven over the dam, a breach occurred sending a wall of water over the villages downstream. The floods killed approximately 120-180 people, destroyed over 1,600 houses and 2,000 acres (810 ha) of paddy, affecting over 8,000 families.

Marc Seguin was born

Marc Seguin was a French engineer, inventor of the wire-cable suspension bridge and the multi-tubular steam-engine boiler. He developed the first suspension bridge in continental Europe and a total of 186 toll bridges throughout France.
