Lapua Cartridge Factory explosion
Forty workers die in an explosion at the Lapua ammunition factory, the deadliest accidental disaster in modern history in Finland. In November 1976 investigators found that the explosion had begun with a machine which dispensed gunpowder and had spread from there, causing a chain reaction. However, a definitive cause of the explosion was never discovered.

The memorial is composed of circular marble steps, a portico, a circular colonnade of Ionic order columns, and a shallow dome. It was dedicated on the 200th anniversary of President Thomas Jefferson's birth.
Alexander Mitchell was born
Alexander Mitchell was an Irish engineer who invented the screw-pile lighthouse although from 1802 he was blind. The screw-pile was used for the erection of lighthouses and other structures on mudbanks and shifting sands, including bridges and piers.
Richard Trevithick was born
Richard Trevithick was a British inventor and mining engineer. He was an early pioneer of steam-powered road and rail transport, and his most significant contributions were the development of the first high-pressure steam engine and the first working railway steam locomotive.
