The Marina Torch is a redidential skyscraper in Dubai Marina. It is 352 meters tall, with 86 floors above ground, and was the tallest residential building in the world on its completion in 2011, surpassing Q1 in Gold Coast, Australia.

MetLife Stadium opened

MetLife Stadium is an open-air multi-purpose stadium at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and home to the New York Giants and New York Jets. At an approximate cost of $1.6 billion, it was the most expensive stadium built in the United States at the time of its completion.

1979 Red River Valley tornado outbreak

Impacting the Red River Valley, the outbreak killed 58 people and injured 1,927 others. The most notable tornado was an F4 tornado that destroyed most of the southern part of Wichita Falls, Texas, and is commonly referred to as "Terrible Tuesday" by many meteorologists.

Kauffman Stadium opened

The Kauffman Stadium is a baseball stadium located in Kansas City. It was originally named Royals Stadium when it opened and its current seating capacity is 37,903. The park's best-known feature is the fountain and waterfall display, which at 322 feet (98 m) is the largest privately funded fountain in the world.

Veterans Stadium opened

The Veterans Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and housed the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Eagles. Its seating capacities were 65,358 for football, and 56,371 for baseball. The stadium opened with a $3 million scoreboard complex that at the time was the most expensive ever installed.

The Dodger Stadium is a baseball stadium in Los Angeles, California, and home to Major League Basketball's team Los Angeles Dodgers. Its construction lasted less than three years and cost US$23 (US$206 in 2020).

Joseph-Louis Lagrange died

Italian mathematician, physisist and astronomer Joseph-Louis Lagrange died at the age of 77. His treatise on analytical mechanics written in Berlin and first published in 1788, offered the most comprehensive treatment of classical mechanics since Newton and formed a basis for the development of mathematical physics in the nineteenth century.

The Great Trigonometrical Survey of India started

The Great Trigonometrical Survey of the entire Indian subcontinent started with the measurement of a baseline near Madras. The project was led by British infantry officer William Lambton and the East India Company. Among the many accomplishments of the Survey were the demarcation of the British territories in India and the measurement of the height of the Himalayan giants: Everest, K2, and Kanchenjunga.
