1979 Red River Valley tornado outbreak
Impacting the Red River Valley, the outbreak killed 58 people and injured 1,927 others. The most notable tornado was an F4 tornado that destroyed most of the southern part of Wichita Falls, Texas, and is commonly referred to as "Terrible Tuesday" by many meteorologists.

The Great Trigonometrical Survey of India started
The Great Trigonometrical Survey of the entire Indian subcontinent started with the measurement of a baseline near Madras. The project was led by British infantry officer William Lambton and the East India Company. Among the many accomplishments of the Survey were the demarcation of the British territories in India and the measurement of the height of the Himalayan giants: Everest, K2, and Kanchenjunga.
