Matt Baldwin died
Mathew Martyn Baldwin was a petroleum engineer. He and classmate George Knoll formed Baldwin and Knoll, a well servicing company that became Canada's largest service rig company for three decades. He was a founding director of Alberta Energy Company, serving for 25 years, and in 2000 named a member of the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame.

The Bahrain World Trade Center's wind turbines inaugurated
Located in Manama, Bahrain World Trade Center (also called Bahrain WTC or BWTC) is a 240-metre-high (787 ft), 50-floor, twin tower complex. The BWTC's wind turbines turned together for the first time in 2008, making it officially the world's first building with integrated wind turbines.

The 1946 Dominican Republic earthquake occurred on August 4 at 17:51 UTC near Samana, Dominican Republic. The mainshock measured 7.8 on the moment magnitude scale and 8.1 on the surface wave magnitude scale. An aftershock occurred four days later on August 8 at 13:28 UTC with a moment magnitude of 7.0. A tsunami was generated by the initial earthquake and caused widespread devastation across Hispaniola. The tsunami was observed in much of the Caribbean and the northwestern Atlantic Ocean.
