I-10 Twin Span Bridge (westbound) opened
Officially known as the Frank Davis "Naturally N'Awlins" Memorial Bridge, I-10 Twin Span Bridge consists of two parallel trestle bridges. The old Twin Spans suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Katrina, making it necessary to reconstruct them. Its total length is 5.4 miles (8.7 km) with each span being 60 feet (18 m) wide.
Warsaw Metro began operation
Serving the Polish capital Warsaw, the Warsaw Metro currently consists of two lines, the north-south Line M1 which links central Warsaw with its densely populated northern and southern districts, and the east-west Line M2, of which the westernmost segment is in construction. The length of the system is 41.3 km (25.7 mi) and as of 2023, the majority of the operating rolling stock is Siemens-built (Siemens Inspiro type).
Austin Dam failure (Texas)
The Austin Dam failure, also referred to as "The Great Granite Dam" failure, was a catastrophic dam failure near Austin, Texas that killed several dozen people in 1900. The destruction of the dam drained the Lake McDonald reservoir and left the city of Austin without electrical power for a number of months.
George Washington Whistler died
George Washington Whistler was a prominent American civil engineer best known for building steam locomotives and railroads. He is credited with introducing the steam whistle to American locomotives and the Howe truss for the Russian railroad's bridges.
