Luoyang Subway opened

Luoyang Subway is a metro network serving urban and suburban districts of Luoyang. It is the second metro system in Henan Province, as well as the first metro system in a city that is not a provincial capital in central and western China. Line 1 is a west-east line from Hongshan station to Yangwan station. It began construction in June 2017. It was opened on 28 March 2021. Line 1 is 25.3 kilometres (15.7 mi) in length with 19 stations. The first phase of Line 2 is 18.216 kilometres (11.319 mi) in length with 15 stations.

2005
2005 Nias-Simeulue earthquake

The 2005 Nias-Simeulue earthquake occurred on 28 March off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. At least 915 people were killed, mostly on the island of Nias. The event caused panic in the region, which had already been devastated by the massive tsunami triggered by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, but this earthquake generated a relatively small tsunami that caused limited damage. It was the third most powerful earthquake since 1965 in Indonesia. Seismic recordings give the earthquake a moment magnitude of about 8.6, and effects were felt as far away as Bangkok, Thailand, over 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) away.

1996
Taipei Metro opened

Taipei Mass Rapid Transit, branded as Metro Taipei, is a rapid transit system serving the capital Taipei and New Taipei in Taiwan, it is one of the world's busiest rapid transit systems. Taipei Metro was the first metro system ever built in Taiwan. The initial network was approved for construction in 1986 and work began two years later. It began operations on March 28, 1996, and by 2000, 62 stations were in service across three main lines. Over the next nine years, the number of passengers had increased by 70%. Since 2008, the network has expanded to 131 stations and the passenger count has grown by another 96%, making it one of the world's busiest metro systems.

1993
Naples Metro opened

The Naples Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city of Naples, Campania, Italy and some parts of the adjacent comuni of its metropolitan area through Line 11. The system comprises four underground rapid transit lines (Line 1, Line 2, Line 6, Line 11, with Line 10 being under construction). It is the third largest underground network in Italy, preceded by that of Milan and that of Rome. Construction of the first underground metro railway (Line 1) began in 1976, and the first part opened on 28 March 1993. However, line 2 was opened on 28 September 1925 as an urban railway service line, the first in Italy.

1965
1965 Valparaíso earthquake

The 1965 Valparaíso earthquake (also known as the La Ligua earthquake) struck near La Ligua in Valparaíso Region, Chile, about 140 km (87 mi) from the capital Santiago on Sunday, March 28 at 12:33 local time. The moment magnitude (Mw) 7.4-7.6 earthquake killed 400-500 people and inflicted US$1 billion (adjusted for inflation) in damage.

1965
El Cobre New and Old Dam failure

Severe liquefaction from the 1965 Valparaíso earthquake resulted in the failure of 17 tailing dams, the most severe of which affected the town of El Cobre. Two dams belonging to the El Soldado mine released 350,000 and 1,900,000 cubic meters (12,000,000 and 67,000,000 cubic feet) cubic meters of debris respectively, and traveled 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) downstream which destroyed the town of El Cobre, in La Calera, burying it under three feet of muck. About 60 to 70 farmhouses and cottages were swept away by the cascading debris flow. Many of the casualties were miners and peasants who were mining for copper. The official death toll is at 247, but is thought to be as high as 350-400.
