2022 Fukushima earthquake
On March 16, 2022, at 23:36 JST, a strong earthquake struck off the coast of Fukushima, Japan. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.4 according to the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA), while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) gave an estimate of 7.3. Immediately after the event a 30 cm tsunami was reported. As a result of this natural disaster, three people died and 247 were injured.
The Shard construction started
The Shard, also referred to as the Shard London Bridge and formerly London Bridge Tower, is a 72-storey skyscraper, designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, in Southwark, London, that forms part of The Shard Quarter development. Standing 309.6 metres (1,016 feet) high, The Shard is the tallest building in the United Kingdom, and the seventh-tallest building in Europe. It is also the second-tallest free-standing structure in the United Kingdom, after the concrete tower of the Emley Moor transmitting station.
Daejeon Metro opened
Daejeon Metro is the rapid transit system of Daejeon, South Korea. The single-line subway network first opened in 2006 with 12 stations. The line was expanded in 2007 and it now consists of one line, 22 operating stations, and 22.74 kilometres (14.13 mi) of route.
James Laurie died
American engineer and one of the founders of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) James Laurie was born in Scotland but he moved to Boston when he was 21 years old. He performed surveying, bridge design, and route design for a number of railroads in New England. He was appointed president of ASCE for two years and was the first to present a paper to the society.
