1887 Liguria earthquake
The 1887 Liguria earthquake struck off the coast of Imperia, Italy on the early morning of February 23, 1887 with an estimated moment magnitude of 6.8-6.9, killing about 600-3,000 people. It also generated a tsunami that had a run-up height of 2 meters. The widespread damage was said to be so severe that the town of Bussana Vecchia was abandoned by the locals that used to live in the area.
Carl Friedrich Gauss died
German mathematician and physicist Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss is sometimes referred to as "the greatest mathematician since antiquity". Gauss had an exceptional influence in many fields of mathematics and science, proving the fundamental theorem of algebra and inventing the fast Fourier transform algorithm and the method of least squares, among others. Furthermore, Gauss invented the heliotrope in 1821, magnetometer in 1833, and alongside Wilhelm Eduard Weber, invented the first electromagnetic telegraph in 1833.
Alfred P. Boller was born
Alfred Pancoast Boller was a civil engineer and bridge designer. He was the chief engineer on several bridge building projects during the late 1800 and early 1900s. Boller designed the third Market Street Bridge in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, several swing bridges over the Harlem River in New York City and the Connecticut River Bridge in Connecticut. He was also the chief engineer of Manhattan's elevated railroads.
