Shum Yip Upperhills Tower 1 construction started
Shum Yip Upperhills Tower 1 is a supertall skyscraper completed in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. It stand at 388.1 metres (1,273.3 ft) tall. The tower has a novel structural system called a "Ladder Core System" where the perimeter mega columns are connected to the central reinforced concrete core at every story as opposed to the typical configuration where they are only connected via outriggers at mechanical floors. Additionally, unlike other supertall skyscrapers with mega-columns, Shum Yip T1 does not have any supplemental gravity columns in the office portion of the tower.
Sikhote-Alin meteorite fell on earth
An iron meteorite fell on the Sikhote-Alin Mountains, in southeastern Russia, in 1947. Large iron meteorite falls have been witnessed and fragments recovered but never before, in recorded history, a fall of this magnitude. An estimated 23 tonnes of fragments survived the fiery passage through the atmosphere and reached the Earth.
Tornado outbreak of February 12, 1945
On February 12, 1945, a devastating tornado outbreak occurred across the Southeastern United States. The storms killed 45 people and injured 427 others. This outbreak included a devastating tornado that struck Montgomery, Alabama, which killed 26 people. The United States Weather Bureau described this tornado as "the most officially observed one in history" as it reached within 0.5 miles (0.80 km) from the U.S. Weather Bureau's office. Tornado expert Thomas P. Grazulis estimated the intensity of the Montgomery tornado to be F3 on the Fujita scale.
Lincoln Memorial broke ground
The Lincoln Memorial is a U.S. national memorial that honors the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. With Congressional approval and a $300,000 allocation, the project got underway. On February 12, 1914, contractor M. F. Comer of Toledo, Ohio; resident member of the memorial's commission, former Senator Joseph C. S. Blackburn of Kentucky; and the memorial's designer, Henry Bacon conducted a groundbreaking ceremony by turning over a few spadefuls of earth. The following month is when actual construction began. Work progressed steadily according to schedule.
