2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake
On 6 February 2023, at 04:17 TRT (01:17 UTC), a Mw 7.8 earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria. The epicenter was 37 km (23 mi) west-northwest of Gaziantep. The earthquake had a maximum Mercalli intensity of XII (Extreme) around the epicenter and in Antakya. It was followed by a Mw 7.7 earthquake at 13:24. This earthquake was centered 95 km (59 mi) north-northeast from the first. There was widespread damage and tens of thousands of fatalities.
Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge construction completed
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB) is a 55-kilometre (34 mi) bridge-tunnel system consisting of a series of three cable-stayed bridges, an undersea tunnel, and four artificial islands. It is both the longest sea crossing and the longest open-sea fixed link in the world. The HZMB spans the Lingding and Jiuzhou channels, connecting Hong Kong and Macau with Zhuhai- a major city on the Pearl River Delta in China. The HZM Bridge was designed to last for 120 years and cost ¥127 billion (US$18.8 billion) to build.
Ivanovo Dam failure
During Cyclone Julia, the Ivanovo Dam in Bulgaria burst, flooding the village of Bisser downstream with 2.5 meters (8 feet) of water.
Weinan Weihe Grand Bridge opened
The Weinan Weihe Grand Bridge is a part of the Zhengzhou-Xi'an High-Speed Railway which connects Zhengzhou and Xi'an, in China. The 79.732-kilometer (49.543 mi)-long bridge crosses the Wei River twice, as well as many other rivers, such as the Ling river, Luofu river, Xi river, Shi Di river and many more, highways and railways. Upon its completion, it was the longest bridge in the world, but surpassed by two new bridges on Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway that completed in 2010. The bridge was completed in 2008 but the railway line itself did not open until February 6, 2010. It is now the 3rd longest bridge in the world.
Opuha Dam failure
The Opuha Dam is located on the Opuha River, a tributary of the Opihi River in South Canterbury, New Zealand. The dam is used for water storage for farming irrigation and provides 7.7 MW of electricity to New Zealand's national grid. The site has been identified as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International because it supports breeding colonies of the endangered black-billed gull. The dam failed during construction on 6 February 1997 due to heavy rain. It was completed in 1998, creating Lake Opuha.
1973 Luhuo earthquake
The 1973 Luhuo earthquake struck near the town of Zhaggo in Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province, China on February 6, 1973, with a magnitude of 7.6 Ms. The earthquake had a maximum intensity of X (Extreme) on the Modified Mercalli intensity scale. It resulted in between 2,175 and 2,204 deaths and a further 2,743 injuries. Serious and widespread destruction occurred in Luhuo County.
