CNEOS 2014-01-08 hit earth
CNEOS 2014-01-08 (also known as Interstellar meteor 1; IM1), is a putative interstellar object reported in June 2019 by astronomers Amir Siraj and Abraham Loeb, and confirmed by the United States Space Command in April 2022. The discovery was publicized in 2019 in a preprint announcing a 0.45 m (1.5 ft) meteor detected on 8 January 2014 near the northeast coast of Papua New Guinea.
2009 Cinchona earthquake
The 2009 Cinchona earthquake occurred at 1:21:35 pm local time on January 8 with an Mwc magnitude of 6.1 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VII (Very strong). The shock took place in northern Costa Rica, 30 kilometres (19 mi) north-northwest of San José and was felt throughout Costa Rica and in southern central Nicaragua.
2006 Greece earthquake
The 2006 Greece earthquake - also known as the Kythira earthquake - was felt throughout the entire eastern Mediterranean basin. The earthquake an Mw magnitude 6.7 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VII (Very strong). Its epicentre was located just off the island of Kythira about 200 kilometres (120 mi) south of Athens. One person was injured and a number of buildings and roads in Kythira were heavily damaged as a result. Several older houses on the island completely collapsed while the central square of the village of Mitata partially fell into the valley as a result of a subsequent landslide. Few buildings were damaged on the mainland closest to the epicentre.
Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport opened
Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport is one of two international airports serving Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey. Located 32 km (20 mi) southeast of the city center, Sabiha Gökçen Airport is in the Asian part of the bi-continental city and serves as the hub for AnadoluJet and Pegasus Airlines. The facility is named after Sabiha Gökçen, adoptive daughter of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the first female fighter pilot in the world. Although Istanbul Airport, located 63 km (39 mi) west of the European side of Istanbul, is larger, Sabiha Gökçen is still one of the largest airports in the country.
