Prof. J. G. Zornberg, from the University of Texas at Austin, gave his lecture “Geosynthetic Applications in Railways and Roadways” on the 5th of October in Athens, Greece, during the 9th Panhellenic Conference of Geotechnical Engineering.
The lecture, which is now available on YouTube, presents a large variety of available types of geosynthetics that can be used to fulfill many different functions in transportation engineering applications.
Prof. Zornberg explained the functions and applications of geosynthetics in roadways, stating how they can act as separators between different material zones, as well as material reinforcement or stiffeners. He said that they can also be used as barriers, filters, or drainers.
Furthermore, in terms of applications, geosynthetics can mitigate several mechanisms and be used in preventing reflective cracking in asphalt overlays, stabilize unbound aggregate layers, reduce layer intermixing, reduce moisture in structural layers, stabilize soft subgrades, and finally mitigate shrink/swell distress of subgrades.
The professor then went on to analyze the types of geosynthetics, as well as to highlight state-of-the-art products available today, relating them to their applications, objectives, mechanisms, and functions.
We found Prof. J. G. Zornberg’s lecture very informative on geosynthetics’ applications and can highly recommend watching it.
