Measurand has been helping geotechnical people solve their slope and structure monitoring problems for over a decade.
About ten years ago Measurand installed the first SAAs in California and New York State, making it possible to monitor slope stability in an easier way, with greater survivability. Since then, Measurand has provided over 65,000 meters of SAA to geotechnical projects around the world, and the orders keep coming in. What accounts for this wide acceptance of SAA? Ever since the first manual traversing inclinometers were introduced, and their big brother the in-place inclinometer was developed, the monitoring community has been using them to assess the movement of soil and structures, but wishing that they would last longer, cost less, and be easier to use and install.
Almost by chance, SAA enabled a new range of applications that were next to impossible with existing inclinometer technology. Before Measurand entered the geotechnical engineering field, its products were high-sensor-count arrays using fiber optic ShapeTape and wireless streaming to solve problems for people capturing motion for film animation purposes. Dr. Tarek Abdoun of Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute came along as a customer for ShapeTape and eventually talked into adapting it for geotechnical measurements.
The main adaptation was to use MEMS tilt sensors instead of fiber optic sensors. But most of our existing math and patent base for arrays of hundreds of sensors was applicable to SAA using MEMS sensors. A lot of the software applied also. Measurand also learned what geotechnical engineering means, and how to make sensors practical in that sometimes very harsh environment.
