A riverside redevelopment at Ransome’s Wharf in Battersea involves the integration of geotechnical engineering methods and low-carbon construction materials within a constrained urban environment. The project includes the installation of over 500 temporary sheet piles to support excavation for a deep basement structure.

A specialist contractor installed 532 Z-section sheet piles, each approximately 10–11 m in length, to provide lateral earth retention for excavations exceeding 4 m in depth. The works are designed to facilitate construction of a reinforced concrete basement while maintaining stability of adjacent infrastructure, including highways and nearby dockside assets.

Ground conditions include dense Kempton Gravels and a shallow groundwater table, presenting geotechnical challenges. Sheet piles were driven into the underlying London Clay to provide ground support and reduce groundwater inflow. Additional sealing measures were applied at interlocks to limit seepage during excavation.

A hydraulic press-in installation method was used to reduce vibration and minimise ground movement, which is important in dense urban settings. Pre-augering was applied to improve drivability through dense granular soils and support installation accuracy.

From a materials perspective, the project incorporates steel sections produced from recycled content, contributing to reduced embodied carbon compared to conventional production methods.
