Deep Rift Beneath the Himalayas: Indian Plate Splitting and the Implications

A major geophysical study unveiled at the AGU conference has confirmed that the Indian Plate is undergoing delamination. Seismic data, combined with helium isotope readings from thermal springs in southern Tibet, reveal mantle material pushing into gaps formed by a vertical fracture. This differs from traditional subduction processes. Instead, the dense lower portion of the Indian Plate appears to be detaching and sinking into the mantle. This process may revise current models of continental plate stability and tectonic interaction in the region.

The Indian Plate is not monolithic. It includes both thin oceanic crust and thick continental lithosphere, rendering it vulnerable to internal failure under prolonged tectonic stress. For over 60 million years, it has pushed against the Eurasian Plate, uplifting the Himalayas. Now, evidence from geologists indicates that this stress has triggered an internal rupture. Data suggest that the southern regions of the fracture release crustal helium, while northern areas show mantle-derived signatures, clear signs of deep tectonic disruption.

This confirmed split introduces serious implications for earthquake forecasting in the Himalayan belt. Stress redistribution and emerging fault dynamics could lead to changes in earthquake frequency and magnitude. Furthermore, links have been drawn between the Cona-Sangri Rift in the Tibetan Plateau and this internal fracture, showing how deep tectonic processes shape surface geomorphology. Seismologists emphasized that improved models informed by these findings could be valuable for refining earthquake risk assessments in the Himalayan region.
