Failing bluffs, shoreline erosion, landslides, and other geohazards can dangerously threaten transportation and require a rapid emergency response for public safety and to minimize the impact on the environment.
A city in Washington State contracted GeoStabilization International®, experts in engineered soil repairs, to provide bluff stabilization along a roadway within the scenic waterfront area on the bay’s east bank. Over time, erosion caused the slope to lose its soil retention properties, resulting in the loss of road shoulder and compromising the southbound travel lane’s stability.
GeoStabilization’s engineering group’s repair plan, which was accepted by the city, consists of a soil nail wall combined with shotcrete facing to provide slope stabilization. Due to the environmentally sensitive riparian zone below, all the soil nailing activities had to be done from the top of the bluff.
Working from only one lane of the roadway above, the crews began drilling approximately 200 soil nails horizontally into the slope. A steel-reinforcing element was then secured to the soil anchors before 2,600 square feet of shotcrete was applied to the face. The shotcrete wall was applied against a plywood form in the original bluff’s face location to regain the original shoulder width for guardrail installation. GeoStabilization’s crews successfully installed all soil nails using our fleet of excavator-mounted drills and applied the shotcrete while working off man lifts and safety ropes.
